The cadets who take archery class and participate in archery competitions at UMA are
well aware of the quirky coach that runs the range. Brandishing an unlimited store of corny dad jokes, Coach Mark Sage passes on his knowledge and his passion for the sport.

Cadets in archery are familiar with Coach Sage and his antics. Though he jests, he is a
good teacher. His teachings have brought many cadets into the higher levels of archery.
“I like Coach Sage. He’s taught me for two years, and he has helped me improve a lot
since the beginning,” said Cadet Scharp.
Another cadet that has been taught by Coach Sage for a long time is Cadet L Bowman.
He has been under the wing of Coach Sage for four years, and in that time he has seen a lot of
Coach. Mainly quirky moments, but there were times that he saw Coach Sage get serious.
“I think Coach Sage is wonderful, he’s definitely an amazing person, but he can
definitely scare people…” said Cadet L. Bowman.
These experienced members of archery have learned almost everything they know about
archery from Coach Sage. The newer members are also aware of the opportunities and lessons presented in front of them. They just have to be willing to learn.
“He can be strict, but that can be good. It helps us, and [he] gives us the proper attention
which helps us improve,” said Cadet G. Heiner.
There’s a reason why Coach Sage is an expert in teaching archery. He has a long history
in teaching archery to a variety of different people.
“I taught archery at the Marshall White Community Center for five years,” Coach Sage
said, “I was a volunteer Youth Activity Director and Education Officer for the Hill AFB
Archery.”
With the variety of places that Coach Sage has been, he can bring all of his experience to
bear and use it to teach the cadets of UMA. On top of the experience, Coach Sage has gotten his level 4 certification. He moved up from level 3 to level 4 during the last school year. This level 4 certification allows Coach Sage to teach on the Olympic level, showing that he is a very qualified coach.
Outside of archery Coach Sage has an interest in film. His pursuit of film has brought
him to even start production on his own animated film.
“My interests include film and animation production. I have an animated screenplay I
have been individually producing,” Coach Sage said.
Coach Sage has also gone to great lengths to pursue his passion. For roughly three years
he has been working on this project. He has even gone to an award winning animator to help
with it. “Along with the production process I am working with an academy award winning
animator to establish an animation studio in the Ogden area.”
Although filmmaking is something that Coach Sage is less known for, he is more known for his dad jokes. These dad jokes can range from a story to a pun. Nothing is off limits in the dad joke area.
As an example of how prolific Coach Sage’s dad jokes are, he has shared one for
everyone to enjoy. “Why was Cinderella such a bad archer… Her coach was a pumpkin,” Coach Sage, 2024.
