This is the second year that UMA has had the opportunity to participate in the Cookie Dough fundraiser for the music program, however, Mr. Paul Kapp, the music instructor, has been working with DeHaan Enterprises for almost 40 years. The fundraiser sells cookie dough tubs as well as boxes and has a variety of different choices, like snicker doodle, white chocolate chip macadamia nut and Hershey’s.
Mr. Kapp met Mr. DeHaan, the fundraiser influencer, back in 1984. He started working with the program when he was a teacher at Davies High School. Last year they fund-raised for the choir trip, but this year they’re putting the money towards music equipment, specifically music lockers and more instruments.
“Last year we sold about 42 orders of cookies, roughly” says Mr. Kapp. It seems to be very successful, especially since last year was the first time UMA has been working with Mr. DeHaan.
There are ups and downs to fundraising, but Mr. Kapp has seen it all. He answered that the easiest would probably be to motivate students and have them sell. As for the hardest, the more people you convince to contribute the more you receive, which depends on how good your salesmanship is.
Fundraising isn’t for everyone, but at least trying to get one sale could make a difference for the cause. So, if you ever get the opportunity to participate in one, you should. It can help build skills like communication, salesmanship and confidence. If the fundraiser opportunity comes around again, try to involve yourself.
