Patagotitan Mayorum, part of the Titanosaur genus, is the largest creature ever to walk the Earth. Patagotitan weighed about seventy-six tons and had a length of 121 feet. Titanosaur lived over 145 million years ago during the late Jurassic period, and on every continent except Antarctica.
Titanosaur is a sauropod meaning it was herbivorous, walked on four legs, and had a long tail and neck. Titanosaur differed from other sauropod by having a wider stance and stockier body. Titanosaur also had vertebrae with honeycomb-like interiors. Some Titanosaur have even been shown to possess armored plates.
Although no complete Titanosaur skeleton has been found the first fossils were discovered in central India in 1877. With only a femur and two caudal vertebrae being found from the first Titanosaur, scientists were very hesitant about whether to classify Titanosaur as its own genus. The bones found from the original Titanosaur were considered a “ wastebin taxon” according to John P Rafferty. Wastebin taxon is a term used to describe a placeholder group for fossils not distinct enough to be classified as other groups.
