Full Name: Lanetta Lewis
Where are you from? What do you mean by from? I was born in Stuttgart, Germany because my Dad was stationed there. At age 8 my Dad retired from the Air Force and we settled in my Mother’s hometown Beaufort, SC where Parris Island is located. I grew up around the Marines, Airforce, Army, and Navy. I moved to Utah in 2011.
Describe your family? I have the greatest kids in the world. A boy who is 4 and a girl who is 7. My ex-husband lives in Brigham City and my kids get to see him every other weekend. My Dad lives with me and helps me with childcare. I have three younger brothers who still live in the South with their spouses and kids. My stepmother also lives in SC and visits occasionally. My mother died from cancer in 2011.
Educational background? In 2005 I earned a BA in Mathematics from Columbia College, a private liberal arts all female college in SC. It is no longer all female. In 2014 I earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Utah State University.
Work experience? I have had many jobs. My first job was as a teenager working as a cleaner at McDonalds and a cashier at Dollar Tree. In college I was a Math tutor. After Columbia College I taught high school Math at an inner city high school. I then worked as a children’s librarian until returning to college. At Utah State I worked as a Math and Engineer tutor and had an internship in El Paso, TX. After graduation I worked at Hill Air Force Base as an Electrical Engineer. After having my kids I stayed home and earned money on the side by tutoring and typing menus. Last year I worked part-time as a Math Aide at Grantsville High.
How did you get to UMA?I saw a job opening on a charter school job board. I applied and fell in love with the school. I am so excited to be here!
What is your position at UMA? High School Math teacher: Math 2 Honors, Math 2, PreCalculus and Math 3.
Hobbies? What are your interests outside of school/work?
Read, garden, organize, watch educational shows on youtube, various board games, swim, hang with friends
Name one thing cadets should know about you.
I asked a cadet and she said that “you’re awesome”.
