This summer was filled with blockbuster movies, the most notable being The Barbie Movie and Oppenheimer. However a, movie for more of a niche audience was Asteroid City, which is a comedy/drama the running time is 1hr 45 min and the age rating is PG-13. While Asteroid City was pretty popular this summer, it may not have appealed to everyone due to its blunt dialogue and complex plot.
Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Budapest Hotel, and Isle of Dogs are some of Wes Anderson’s most popular films. The newest of his films is Asteroid City. Wes Anderson has a unique way of directing films using odd filters to make the scenes look cozy and relaxing. These filters usually match the theme of the movie, like depicting a desert with a reddish orange dust color.
Asteroid City takes place in 1955 in a desert town that is having a convention for stargazers. It starts off with a brief description given similar to the beginning of a play. The movie transitions from colorful scenes that represent a show on tv, to black and white scenes where the actors and have sort of a behind the scenes moments.
The film had many popular actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Maya Hawk and Steve Carell. It’s hard to judge the acting from the movie on a base level because of the lack of emotion and blunt line delivery by the actors. However, these actors told the story in a same way that Wes Anderson’s previous films are presented.
Rotten Tomatoes rated the film a 70% on the tomatometer, however the overall rating I would give it is a 9/10. Because the movie had a interesting plot, good script, and good acting, I thought the movie overall was a great production. Others might rate the film lower because of the confusing plot and different way of storytelling, but I found it to be more engaging for those reasons.
